The military component would  be headed by a two-star force commander.
Within the capacity provided by this revised downsizing schedule, the military component would adopt the following strategy.
The Mission's military component would  thus total 1,850 all ranks.

Upon receiving its mandate,the peace support operation, through its military component, would also assume operational control over two existing international monitoring mechanisms for a period of three months: the Joint Military  Commission and the Verification and Monitoring Team.
The military component would  be headed by a force commander, with the rank of Major-General, assisted by a deputy force commander.
In the interim, the military component would  be reduced to a total strength of 3,500 by July 2003 and to 3,300 by October 2003.
The Military Component would  be headed by a Chief Military  Observer and would include a total of 160 military observers.
The final composition of UNOMIL's military component would  be dependent on ECOMOG's deployment, but would not exceed a total of 92 military  observers.
The military component would also need the capacity to provide security for United Nations facilities and personnel, including military  observers.
In the Central African Republic, the military component would also play a significant role in deterring the movement of armed groups between the Sudan and Chad through the Central African Republic.
The military component would include a small headquarters, and would  have an integrated chain of command for the military  liaison and formed military components. .
A capable and appropriately configured military component would play a fundamental role in efforts to improve security and is a requirement for the deployment and effective functioning of an international police presence.
The military component would also have less capacity to meet security and deterrence requirements or provide logistical support during elections and natural disasters.
Any reduction in the size of MINURSO,particularly its military component, would have a negative impact on the implementation of its mandate and would  send the wrong message about the resolve of the international community to support self-determination.
The military component would assist in protecting civilians at risk, facilitate delivery of humanitarian relief, and seek through its presence to reduce tension and deter conflict, with a view to establishing a more secure environment in its area of deployment.
The military component would need to monitor and verify the security and law and order environment and aim at pre-empting, preventing and deterring the escalation of imminent security threats.
In the sectors, the military component would monitor the cross-border activities of armed groups and conduct patrols to provide area security coverage around towns, villages and internally displaced persons locations.
In addition, the military component would retain a reduced military  helicopter company to provide the mission with the necessary investigative and medical evacuation capabilities and two small military  medical dressing stations.
The military component would also ensure the security and freedom of movement of United Nations and associated personnel and protect, to the fullest extent possible, civilians facing imminent threat of physical violence.
