Measures to manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
Contributions received from the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization(NASCO) and the Pacific Island Forum Fisheries Agency(FFA) described general efforts andactivities to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
Measures to address bottom fisheries and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
At its sixty-fourth session, in 2009, the General Assembly conducted a review of the actions taken by States and regional fisheries management organizations andarrangements to regulate bottom fishing activities and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
It is important to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems and thus balance sustainable use and conservation.
CCAMLR, at its annual meeting in 2008,took a number of decisions in response to the requirements of General Assembly resolution 61/105 to ensure sustainable management of fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing practices.
It is important to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems and thus to find a balance between sustainable use and conservation.
The present report is prepared pursuant to General Assembly resolution 61/105, paragraphs 80 and 90, in which the General Assembly requested States and regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements(RFMO/As) to sustainably manage fisheries,regulate bottom fisheries and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems VMEs.
Improved scientific knowledge andnew technologies will only further advance our ability to identify and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, manage bycatch and conserve non-target species, among other objectives.
Some participants provided information on the actions taken by industry organizations to regulate fisheries and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems in areas where regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements did not exist, including impact assessments, fishing effort and data collection.
Further efforts should be made to minimize the impacts of fishing activities on the marine ecosystem, including through the elimination of destructive fishing practices andthe adoption of measures to conserve marine biodiversity and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, with a view to promoting responsible fisheries in the marine ecosystem. .
In order toallow for a preliminary consideration of the implementation of measures to regulate bottom fisheries and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, an interim report on the measures taken by States and RFMO/As to give effect to paragraphs 83 to 90 of resolution 61/105 to address the impacts of fishing on vulnerable marine ecosystems has been provided in this section see also A/61/154.
Following the review, the General Assembly adopted paragraphs 80 to 90 in its resolution 61/105 calling upon States, inter alia,to take action immediately, individually and through RFMO/As, to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing practices, and to adopt and implement measures to regulate bottom fisheries.
Norway, the member States of the European Union andthe European Community indicated that, with particular reference to the coordination of measures to address destructive fishing practices and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, there was a direct link between the outcomes of the Consultative Process subsequently endorsed by the General Assembly and the ongoing implementation of those measures by regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements and States.
At its sixty-first session, the General Assembly called on States, inter alia,to take action immediately, individually and through RFMO/As, to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing practices, and to adopt and implement measures to regulate bottom fisheries resolution 61/105, paras. 80-90.
As discussed below, specific actions have also been taken to promote sustainable aquaculture,address marine pollution, protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing practices, and develop criteria on the objectives and management of MPAs for fisheries purposes.
We encourage States andregional fisheries management organizations to implement the Guidelines to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold water corals from destructive fishing practices.

Calls upon States to take action immediately, individually and through regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements, and consistent with the precautionary approach and ecosystem approaches,to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold water corals, from destructive fishing practices, recognizing the immense importance and value of deep sea ecosystems and the biodiversity they contain;
Calls upon States to take action immediately, individually and through regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements, andconsistent with the precautionary approach and ecosystem approaches, to sustainably manage fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents and cold water corals, from destructive fishing practices, recognizing the immense importance and value of deep sea ecosystems and the biodiversity they contain;
The Icelandic authorities continue to work on protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems within their national jurisdiction.
The Russian Federation will continue to participate actively in the formulation andimplementation of measures aimed at protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems, both individually and within the framework of the appropriate regional fisheries organizations.
This year, States reviewed the implementation of this forum's past commitments related to identifying and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems.
Based on the information present above andin accordance with the annotated provisional agenda, the Netherlands recommends immediate action for protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
We are convinced that sharing our experiences on implementation is fundamental to ensuring that global capacity for protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems can be strengthened.
We look forward to keeping the international community informedof this initiative and to contributing to deliberations in the Consultative Process on protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems.
We acknowledge that further work is required to support the continued implementation of commitments on identifying and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems.
It is directly targeted towards preventing significant adverse impacts-- in effect protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fishing.
At its sixty-fourth session, to be held in 2009, the General Assembly will conduct a review of the action taken by States and regional fisheries management organizations andarrangements in regulating bottom fishing activities and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems, with a view to making further recommendations where necessary.
