At the same time, the Committee accepted an amendment of MPs that also pertained to whistleblower protection. However, in a column written for the daily Danas, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic described this amendment as superfluous and"cosmetic".
Unfortunately, as a rule, they face extremely unpleasant consequences- from mobbing, disciplinary, infringement or even criminal prosecution, to job loss. The Commissioner has stressed that the reasons of fairness alone, and especially the reasons of efficient fight against corruption demand those people, the whistleblowers, to be fully protectedunder the law and that he expects that we will have finally adopted the Whistleblower Protection Law in the course of the next year.
This is the first publication dedicated to the protection of whistleblowers published in the Serbian language. The publication has been prepared within the Project''Whistleblower Protection'' implemented by the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection since July 2012 with the financial support of the British Embassy in Belgrade and the Government of the Kingdom of Holland.
For this reason, the international global network Transparency International asked and obtained access to the project from the Commissioner. The Model Law was made available to the Government of Serbia, specifically the Ministry of Justice; however, they chose to spend budget funds to draft a different model,which resulted in the enactment of the Law on Whistleblower Protection two years later. Both donors made available a total sum of EUR 94,330.25 for project implementation purposes.

The Republic of Serbia has adopted the Law on the protection of whistleblowers in order to provide comprehensive and effective protection of whistleblowers. .
Now the European Greens have called upon the European Commission to provide EU-wide protection for whistleblowers.
Sabic said that the protection of whistleblowers was one of the crucial presumptions for success in combatting corruption.
