It is now for us to review the progress we have made in implementing the Millennium Declaration.

In September 2005, heads of States and Government gathered at the World Summit to assess the implementation of the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits andthe progress made in implementing the Millennium Declaration.
We should acknowledge the crucial linkages between implementing the Millennium Declaration, achieving the Millennium Development Goals and the follow-up of United Nations summits and conferences.
We agree with the Secretary-General 's assessment that the record of the international community in the first two years of implementing the Millennium Declaration is, at best, mixed.
Consideration of agenda items 97 and99 provided an opportunity to review progress in implementing the Millennium Declaration in the context of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action, which had stressed the need for coordinated action to address the problems of social inequality and exclusion, unemployment, poverty and other development constraints.
In the same resolution, the Assembly reiterated the call to assess, on a regular basis,progress towards implementing the Millennium Declaration and requested the Secretary-General to prepare a long-term" road map" towards the implementation of the Millennium Declaration within the United Nations system to be submitted to the Assembly at its fifty-sixth session(see A/56/326).
Mr. Sareva(Finland): The major event this September will provide us with aunique opportunity to take decisive steps towards implementing the Millennium Declaration and meeting the Millennium Development Goals, while at the same time ensuring a safer and more secure world.
He proposes that we set 2005 as a deadline for reaching agreement on the changes that are needed in our international institutions if they are to meet the new challenges, because 2005 not only marks the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations butis also the year in which a review of progress in implementing the Millennium Declaration will take place.
Mr. Listre(Argentina)(spoke in Spanish): The presentation that the Secretary-General made on 12 September, on his report on the work of the Organization(A/57/1)and his report on implementing the Millennium Declaration(A/57/270) shared the common denominator of reaffirming multilateralism as a fundamental diplomatic tool for ensuring peace.
Representative participated in the three-day consultation with women ' s organizations organized by the Millennium Campaign, UNIFEM, and the Heinrich Böll Foundation(HBF), with the aim to brainstorm on key opportunities and challenges in 2005, focusing on the ten-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action andthe five-year review of progress in implementing the Millennium Declaration.
In September 2005, we will meet here to take stock of how much we have all delivered and where we havefailed to do so in implementing the Millennium Declaration and in following up the major United Nations conferences and summits in order to adopt the necessary measures and take the bold decisions-- as the Secretary-General suggests-- to realize our internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).
At the same time, we believe that the Secretariat should begin preparations, in order to provide the membership with a comprehensive evaluation on what has been achieved in terms of the results of the commitments undertaken by the international community in implementing the Millennium Declaration and the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits.
Reiterates that the benefits of space technology and its applications should continue to be brought to the attention, in particular, of the major United Nations conferences and summits for economic, social and cultural development and related fields and that the use of space technology should be promoted in efforts towards achieving the objectives of those conferences and summits and implementing the Millennium Declaration;
At the fifty-ninth session, the Committee would have a unique opportunity to give its work a strategic focus; it needed to determine how it could contribute to the 2005high-level event to assess the progress made in implementing the Millennium Declaration and the outcomes and commitments of the major United Nations conferences and summits in the economic, social and related fields.
His delegation welcomed the report of the Secretary-General on the scope, modalities, format and organization of that meeting(A/64/263), in particular the suggestion that the Assembly might wish to ensure that the scope of the proposed meeting was consistent with the Millennium Declaration and had the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed development goals at its core, and looked forward to the Secretary-General 's comprehensive report on progress achieved towards implementing the Millennium Declaration.
Their contribution to the preparatory process culminated in the publication One United Nations: Catalyst for Progress and Change-- How the Millennium Declaration is Changing the Way the United Nations System Works, which,in reviewing progress in implementing the Millennium Declaration, also charts the way forward for the United Nations system.
