The Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the Area of FDI:Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries was held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, from 12 to 14 December 2005.
The Expert Meeting was held from 12 to 14 December 2005 and provided a forum for discussing key issueson FDI data compilation, analysis and policy formulation in developing countries.

They acknowledged UNCTAD's essential work in the area of capacity-building in FDI statistics,which contributed to harmonization of data and policy formulation in developing countries.
The Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the Area of FDI:Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries was convened in accordance with the decision taken by the Commission on Investment, Technology and Related Financial Issues at its ninth session.
He also suggested a study by the secretariat on Asian experience in achieving stable capital flows to help policy formulation in developing countries.
Consultations were based on multi-stakeholder approach andaimed at building understanding of the complexities involved in services policy formulation in developing countries, helping in organizing their internal consultative process, analyzing best practices and opportunities arising from market access for their services and in formulating development needs.
The need to improve the collection and analysis of FDI data and information on TNCs' activities in developing countries was addressed at the expert meeting on"Capacity-building in the area of FDI:data compilation and policy formulation in developing countries" Geneva, December 2005.
To that end, it is proposed that an Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the Area of FDI: Data Compilation andPolicy Formulation in Developing Countries focus on the issue of FDI data compilation and analysis and policy formulation in developing countries.
As was requested at the ninth session of the Commission on Investment, Technology and Related Financial Issues, the Expert Meeting will focus on issues related to the impact of FDI on development andcapacity building in the area of FDI data compilation and policy formulation in developing countries.
The representative of the United States of America reported on the Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the Area of FDI:Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries, which had taken place from 12 to 14 December 2005, on behalf of its Chairperson.
At its ninth session held in Geneva(26- 30 January 2005), the Commission on Investment, Technology and Related Financial Issues requested the UNCTAD secretariat to organize an Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the Area of FDI:Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries.

It took note of the report of the Expert Meeting on Positive Corporate Contributions to the Economic and Social Development of Host Developing Countries(TD/B/COM.2/EM.17/3) and the report of the Expert Meetingon Capacity Building in the Area of FDI: Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries TD/B/COM.2/EM.18/3.
The Expert Meeting on Positive Corporate Contributions to the Economic and Social Development of Host Developing Countries took place from 31 October to 2 November 2005, and the Expert Meeting on Capacity Building in the area of FDI:Data Compilation and Policy Formulation in Developing Countries was held from 12 to 14 December 2005.
