ECE Governments should promote the use of the terms in ISO/IEC Guide 2-1996 and as defined therein in national legislation, standardization and related activities as well as in relevant international cooperation.
These activities are undertaken with a view to promoting industrial and enterprise development and trade by: encouraging the international harmonization of standards and technical regulations; removing or gradually reducing technical barriers to trade; and promoting scientific and technological cooperation through the development of policies for standardization and related activities.
To continue to collect and analyse information on national horizontal legislation and structures for technical harmonization, standardization and related activities with a view to making a compendium of the information gathered.

The Working Party took note of, and thanked the Estonian Centre for Standardization for,the document TRADE/WP.6/2003/5 on national horizontal legislation concerning technical regulations, standardization and related activities in Estonia. and thanked the Estonian Centre for Standardization for this submission.
The objective of this subprogramme is to promote trade, as well as industrial and enterprise development, in the UNECE region, by(a) encouraging the international harmonization of standards and technical regulations,(b) removing or gradually reducing technical barriers to trade, and(c) promoting scientific and technological cooperation through the development of policies for standardization and related activities.
For the purposes of this Agreement and in accordance with recommendation J of the ECE Recommendations on Standardization Policies,the definitions concerning standardization and related activities in ISO/IEC Guide 2-latest version shall apply.
Considering that the said Guide well meets the requirements of the UNECE Governments for an international terminology for standardization and related activities;
ECE Governments should endorse ISO/IEC Guide 2-1996"General terms and their definition concerning standardization and related activities.
Recognizing that internationallyagreed general terms and their definitions are indispensable for developing international cooperation in standardization and related activities;
To promote the harmonization of the views of members and promote their contribution and participation at the international level in the field of standardization and related activities.
