Initiating joint operations and rapid border interventions at the external borders. .
A rapid reaction pool of border guards and a technical equipment pool will be at thedisposal of the Agency aiming at their deployment in rapid border interventions within days.

To this end, when launching rapid border interventions at the request of a Member State or in the context of a situation requiring urgent action, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency should be able to deploy European Border and Coast Guard Teams from a rapid reserve pool which should be a standing corps composed of a small percentage of the total number of border guards in the Member States, which should amount to a minimum of 1 500 border guards.

Since taking up its responsibilities on 1 May 2005, it has been successful in assisting Member States with implementing the operational aspects of external border management through joint operationsand rapid border interventions, risk analysis, information exchange, relations with third countries and the coordination of the return of third country nationals subject to a return decision issued by a Member State.
