The Office has also continued to promote the Convention among other organizations and mechanisms at the international, regional and subregional levels, and to provide substantive input on matters related to the prevention of and fight against corruption to facilitate the inclusion of those aspects in the activities of other entities withinand outside the United Nations system.
Remarkably, even the United Nations Convention against Corruption does not provide a definition of corruption, even though the purpose of this Convention is specifically to promote and strengthen measures to prevent and combat corruption more efficiently and effectively, and to promote and support international cooperation in the prevention of and fight against corruption.
Recalling that the purposes of the Convention, as set out in article 1, are to promote and strengthen measures to prevent and combat corruption more efficiently and effectively, to promote, facilitate and support international cooperation and technical assistance in the prevention of and fight against corruption, including in asset recovery, and to promote the integrity, accountability and proper management of public affairs and public property.
In the seventh preambular paragraph the States parties,"convinced that the illicit acquisition of personal wealth can be particularly damaging to democratic institutions, national economies and the rule of law", included among the purposes of the Convention"to promote, facilitate and support international cooperation and technical assistance in the prevention of and fight against corruption, including in asset recovery" art. 1 b.
Article 1 of the Convention stipulates that the purposes of the Convention are: first, to promote and strengthen measures to prevent and combat corruption efficiently and effectively; secondly, to promote, facilitate and support international cooperation and technical assistance in the prevention of and fight against corruption, including in asset recovery;and third, to promote integrity, accountability and proper management of public affairs and public property.

The United Nations Convention against Corruption is the first global legally binding instrument against corruption that requires States to establish criminal and other offences to cover a wide range of acts of corruption to promote and strengthen measures to prevent and combat corruption, to facilitate international cooperation and technical assistance in the prevention of and fight against corruption and to promote integrity, accountability and proper management of public affairs and public property.
