The parametric values set in accordance with Article 5 shall be complied with.
Treatment techniques to meet those parametric values are already in place.
Whereas the parametric values are based on the scientific knowledge available and the precautionary principle has also been taken into account;
(a)take appropriate measures to eliminate orreduce the risk of non-compliance with the parametric values set out in Annex I, part C;
In case of non-compliance with the parametric values set out in Annex I, part C, remedial action shall include the measures set out in points(a) to(f) of Article 10(2).
The uncertainty of measurement must not be used as an additional tolerance to the parametric values set out in Schedule 1.
Those parametric values and other non-ionised compounds and trace elements may be displayed with a reference value and/or an explanation;
The uncertainty of measurement laid down in Table 1 shall not be used as an additional tolerance to the parametric values set out in Annex I.
Member States shall ensure that any failure to meet the parametric values set in accordance with Article 5 is immediately investigated in order to identify the cause.
The WHO recommendations, which are based on the most up-to-date scientific data and evidence at international level,should be followed and the parametric values adjusted accordingly.

Whereas it is necessary to set individual parametric values for substances which are important throughout the Community at a level strict enough to ensure that this Directive's purpose can be achieved;
Other measures, such as appropriate treatment techniques, are taken to change the nature or properties of the water before it is supplied so as to reduce oreliminate the risk of the water not complying with the parametric values after supply;
In the cases described in paragraphs 2 and 3, where the non-compliance with the parametric values is considered to be a potential danger to human health, Member States shall as soon as possible take all of the following measures.
The parameters have not been revised in depth since 1998, which prompted the European office of the World Health Organisation(WHO)to issue some recommendations with a view to updating the list of parameters and parametric values laid down in Directive 98/83/EC.
(3)in case of exceedance of the parametric values set in accordance with Article 5, information on the potential danger to human health and the associated health and consumption advice or a hyperlink providing access to such information;
(c) take other measures, such as appropriate conditioning techniques, in cooperation with water suppliers, to change the nature or properties of the water before it is supplied so as to eliminate orreduce the risk of non-compliance with the parametric values after supply;
Member States shall ensure that any failure to meet the parametric values set in accordance with Article 5 at the point of compliance referred to in Article 6 is immediately investigated in order to identify the cause.
The European Commission decided today to send a reasoned opinion to Italy for failing to fulfil its obligations under EU law on the quality of water intended for human consumption(the Drinking Water Directive, Council Directive 98/83/EC), andallowing exceedance of the parametric values for arsenic and fluoride in some areas.
(11) The parametric values used to assess the quality of water intended for human consumption are to be complied with at the point where water intended for human consumption is made available to the appropriate user.
(3) in case of potential danger to human health as determined by competent authorities following an exceedance of the parametric values set in accordance with Article 5, information on the potential danger to human health and the associated health and consumption advice or a hyperlink providing access to such information;

In point 1(b) of Part A of Annex II, the replacement of the words'to demonstrate that the obligations set out in Articles 4 and 5, and the parametric values laid down in Annex I,are being met' with the words'to demonstrate that the obligations set out in Article 4 and the parametric values set in accordance with Article 5 are being met';
Whether or not any failure to meet the parametric values has occurred, Member States shall ensure that any supply of water intended for human consumption which constitutes a potential danger to human health is prohibited or its use restricted or such other action is taken as is necessary to protect human health.
Whereas, to that end, andin the light of a future review of the parametric values, the establishment of parametric values applicable to water intended for human consumption should be based on public-health considerations and on a method of assessing risk;
Member States may provide for derogations from the parametric values, up to a maximum value to be determined by them, provided that no derogation constitutes a potential danger to human health and if the supply of water intended for human consumption in the area concerned cannot otherwise be maintained by any other reasonable means(see Box 3).
Four areas were identified asoffering scope for improvement, namely the list of quality-based parametric values, the limited reliance on a risk-based approach, the imprecise provisions on consumer information, and the disparities between approval systems for materials in contact with water intended for human consumption.
