III. Monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules.
Requests the Special Rapporteur to pay special attention to the situation of children with disabilities when monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules;

That was why Denmark supported the appointment of a special rapporteur who would be expressly responsible for monitoring the implementation of the standard rules.
Presenting the report on monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules to the Commission for Social Development at its forty-fifth session, February 2007, New York;
He hoped that Member States would make the contributions that were needed to further the important work of monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules. Good intentions were not enough.
In monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules, the Special Rapporteur worked closely with various organs and organizations of the United Nations system, including the Commission on Human Rights.
His delegation called on the Secretariat and the Special Rapporteur responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities to strengthen the advisory services for African countries.
His delegation called on UNDP and United Nations organizations and agencies, as well as regional andglobal organizations of persons with disabilities, to continue monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules in cooperation with the Special Rapporteur.
In pursuance of that request, the Secretary-General is transmitting to the Commission on Human Rights his note A/52/56,to which is annexed the final report of the Special Rapporteur of the Commission for Social Development on monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.
His observations and conclusions on the second period of monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities had been of great interest.
At its most recent session(the thirty-fourth), the Commission established three working groups: a Working Group of the Whole to deal with the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development; an Open-ended Working Group on the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond; anda Working Group on Monitoring the Implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.
At its thirty-fourth session, the Commission for Social Development established an open-ended working group to examine the report of the Special Rapporteur responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules and to make recommendations on how to improve the application of the Rules. .
It has been an honour to spend the past six years monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules; raising awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities; advocating for those rights; and urging Governments to sign and ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Takes note with appreciation of the valuable work done by the Special Rapporteur for monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities of the Commission for Social Development, and welcomes his report on his second mission, 1997-2000;
Requests the Special Rapporteur, in monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules, to pay special attention to the situation of children with disabilities, to pursue close working relations with the Committee on the Rights of the Child in its monitoring role with respect to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and to include in his report to the Commission for Social Development at its thirty-eighth session his findings, views, observations and recommendations on children with disabilities.
I remain committed to fulfilling my mandate as the Special Rapporteur of the Commission for Social Development for monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, and to continuing as an interface in cooperating with and supporting Member States, the United Nations system and civil society.
As stated by the former Special Rapporteur of the Commission for Social Development for monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities,"all children and young people of the world, with their individual strengths and weaknesses, with their hopes and expectations, have the right to education.
Keeping that in mind and guided by my strategic plan,the activities of the past year focused on monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules; urging their proper and more intensive implementation; advocating for the issues of persons with disabilities; and supporting all efforts aimed at effecting the kind of transformation sought after by the Standard Rules and the Convention.
Notes with appreciation the valuable work undertaken by the Special Rapporteur on Disability of the Commission for Social Development in monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities under his third mandate for the period 2000- 2002, and also notes with appreciation the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in supporting the work of the Special Rapporteur;
On the basis of this report, and the findings of the Commission's working group,the Commission adopted resolution 34/2, entitled"Monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities". In that resolution,the Commission took note with appreciation of the report of the Special Rapporteur and of his recommendations, and welcomed his general approach to monitoring, including the emphasis to be placed on advice and support to States in the implementation of the Rules. .
