Assistance should include access to new technologies for mine detection and removal andthe promotion of scientific research and development on humanitarian mine-clearance techniques and technology so that mine-clearance activities can be carried out more effectively at lower cost and through safer means.
Encourages Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and foundations to continue to support ongoing activities to promote appropriate technology,as well as international operational and safety standards for humanitarian mine-clearance activities, including the early follow-up of the International Conference on Mine Clearance Technology;See A/51/472, annex.
Pakistan had also provided the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) with nuclear-based techniques and field-testing equipment to locate andidentify abandoned landmines during humanitarian mine-clearance operations. It was committed to continuing to assist in the global endeavour to reverse the damaging consequences of the indiscriminate use of landmines.
In addition, Member States are encouraged to continue to support ongoing activities to promote appropriate technology, as well as international operational andsafety standards for humanitarian mine-clearance activities, including through the early follow-up of the International Conference on Mine Clearance Technology.
With the support and cooperation of the Department of Humanitarian Affairs of the Secretariat and by the work of the Conference,notably in relation to international standards and procedures for humanitarian mine-clearance operations, which can serve as a basis on which to advance the safety, effectiveness and professionalism of these operations throughout the world.
On 7 February,22 August and 5 September 2003, the Committee approved requests from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on behalf of Halo Trust, to import humanitarian mine-clearance equipment to Somalia and, on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme, to import humanitarian equipment to Somalia for the UNDP Rule of Law and Security Programme, under the no-objection procedure.
